by Scott on June 23, 2010

I want to train amy dog a trick not alot of dogs know. Just tell me the trick, how to train it is not needed( I’ll think about it myself). Thank you!
and, is reading words possible for dogs?( the type of thing when you put some words on the floor and they tell you what word is what)
If not, is letting them tell which ITEM is which possible?
My dog is a male rottweiler

I have one for you: Teach your dog to wave bye-byes lol :P

Wave

Your dog should know how to shake hands before learning this trick. Face your dog and hold out your hand as if you are going to shake. When your dog lifts her paw to shake, don’t grab it, just pull back your hand, and say "Wave". Then give your dog a treat.

TIP:
At first your dog may not lift her paw very high. But once she realizes that you’re going to give her a treat if she holds it up there, she’ll get it. You may have to tease her a little with your hand so she thinks you are going to shake with her. Waving your hand a little may help to get her paw into a waving motion as well.

Good Luck :)

I have heard of dogs using picture cards but not word cards . . . . .

I’ve seen a dog that smiles – teeth and all. Although, to be honest, it looks kind of scary (bearing its teeth). It’s okay once you’re used to it, but at first it can look a little strange.

Well I don’t know about usual tricks, but I got a short routine you can use. First tell you dog to sit, then stand, then sit again, then give you paw, then lay down, and finally roll all the way over and they get a treat. Getting your dog to do dance moves will work well as tricks.

My dog plays dead when I do a finger gun and make a shooting noise, took me about 1 minute to teach him.

No, they don’t read words. They respond to a subtle cue from the handler to guide them to the correct answer.

I love "Belly across the desert".

Picture an old time western with the cowboy crawling to the nearest watering hole.

This works even greater when the dog crawls when you turn your back and freezes in the down position when you turn rapidly and face it. Funny trick.
