How much for a trained guard dog?

by Scott on June 4, 2010

Can someone who has a trained guard dog give me an idea of about how much it costs?
From the cost of the dog to training and monthly upkeep.

I feed my dogs a raw diet (which is cheaper than 90% of kibbles). It averages to about 85 cents a pound x 3 pounds a day for a 90lbs male…around a $1,000 a year.

Cost for a good guard dog: $5,000-$8,000
Cost for a good personal protection dog: $8,000-$15,000

Guard dogs = dogs who patrol an indoor or fenced in area and bite ANYBODY but you.
Protection dogs = dogs with good obedience who bite on command or if you’re attacked.

I price guard dogs higher than some people because I believe a guard dog should be a quality animal with sound fundamental training. I price protection dogs lower than most because I’ve never seen an untitled dog who was worth anymore than $5,000 in my eyes, and no protection trained dog worth more than 15k in my eyes unless titled or shown or both!

If you love your dog, he/she will respect you and want to guard you naturally. You dont need to spend money on this type of training.

It will be thousands for the trained dog but the maintenance is just as for any dog. The cost of food will be about $50 a month and you should set aside about that much each month for an annual vet visit. You’ll also need to check with your insurance company. A dog that is trained to bite on command may not be covered in your policy.

I have no real idea, but the first answer is wrong. You cannot expect any old PET dog to protect you. If anything, you should be protecting them. That person has been watching too much Lassie.

I imagine you’d be looking at 4 or 5 number figures. Hopefully Curtis or Greek will see this and answer it.

just get a GSD or Doverman and treat it nicely, my GSD x cost me £10 a week or less, you could take it to guard lessons, a trained guard dog can cost £1000 or more or $1500 or more, you could get a training police dog for cheaper that didnt quite pass, good luck.

Trained "Guard Dog"…$3000-$5000. Trained Personal Protection dog…$15,000-$25,000. Upkeep….depends what you’re gonna feed. Crap…$15.00 for 50 lbs. Premium…$70.00 for 30 lbs.
