What is the best breed of dog for me?

I've never had a dog, but always wanted a big dog.

I'm planning on running with them. What's a good first dog breed that will be able to run with me. I'm extremely dedicated in owning, training and doing everything possible to make my first dog owning experience a great one. I'm interested in a dog that's pretty eager to learn and easy to train.

Breeds that I love are the Doberman, Alaskan Malamute, and Australian Shepherd although I've heard they aren't very good with inexperienced owners.

I think that the best bet would be going to a shelter and picking out one that seems to suit your energy and lifestyle best. The breeds you listed aren’t going to be any more difficult to train than any other. They are high energy dogs, so make sure you have the time to work with them and give them the exercise they need.

Save one from a shelter instead of going through a breeder unless you are set on a certain dog. Many mixes have more desirable personalities anyways! :)

Hope that helps a bit! Good luck. I’m sure whatever your choice is, you will love it.

Labrador retrievers, or a lab mix, seems like a great fit for you. A golden retriever could also work. Please adopt- you save a life! Purebreds can be adopted too, although without papers, and mixed are one of a kind companions!

Those are great dogs if you are paning on have kids or anything you might want to look into there levels of how they react to childern or there aggresive tolarnce alot of dog sights offer this… and too me a german sheperd would do well mostly because they are very protective of there owner. But its allways best to look up there levels.

Picking what breed of dog that is best for you can be tricky. You always want to consider your type of lifestyle, weather being a couch potato or being an energetic person. You also want to think about how much the dog and the supplies will cost. Since you are planning on running with your dog everyday, I would say that any of those breeds that you love would definitely work with your personality and how much you are willing to spend time with your dog.

Either an Australian Shepard or a BOXER!!!!

Look into the Scotch Collie-(very similar natured to the Aussie shepherd and Border Collie), but they don’t have so much drive. There more relaxed natured, but still love a very active owner-Smooth variety is slightly more active then the rough, highly intelligent and easy to train, plus there great with other pets and kids.

    How does a Collie act?

This dog is extremely intelligent and very agile. They have incredible stamina and can run all day with the herd, even over very rough, steep ground. This means they must be challenged both mentally and physically in order to be happy. Obedience training is generally very easy with these dogs as they have no desire so strong as to please their human companions.

They are very loyal, but also very friendly, so they don’t make good guard dogs. Their gentleness makes them a great family dog, as they will interact well even with young children.

If you are looking for a dog who is gentle, intelligent, loyal, and easy to train, the Collie may be perfect for you.

its always better to adopt a dog because you are also saving a life. Most dogs that come out are energetic because they had found a new owner, but a medium sized breed to small sized breed is better for a beginner. Also, the dog you are going to get should be able to live in your type of environment

labs are great a lot of my friends and cousins have had them and love them, i would defiantly advise for a first time dog owner to not get a puppy but instead adopt an adult from a shelter. German Shepherds are also good dogs as long as they have been trained well but they may not be great for a first time. I got a beagle when i was younger and nobody in my family had had a dog before and it was difficult.
A lab is pretty easy to train they can be calm but can also run around with you, but also depending on where you live other breeds may bee better (colder climate maybe something like a malamute) but labs are pretty good in almost any environment as long as they have enough space to run around in.

Personally I don’t think the breed matters. I happen to work with Colorado Saint Bernard Rescue so that is the breed I currently have in my house. But if you like Doberman, Alaskan Malamute, and Australian Shepherd, talk to rescue groups and find out more about these dogs and see if their traits are right for your lifestyle.

Did you know 2-4 million pets are euthanized (killed) in the US every year? Did you also know that more than 1/4 of dogs in shelters are purebred? Between rescue groups, shelters, and time you can find the perfect dog. it may not even be the breed you think you like once you spend the time to meet some dogs.

Rescue groups have events all the tiem where you can meet thier fosters jsut waiting for a good home. Get in touch with some of them.

You can probably find a local organization for any breed you decide you want. Good luck.
