The Boston Terrier Dog – A High-Spirited Pet

The dogs of the Boston terrier breed are small sized dogs, have a friendly character and love having fun, so they are suitable as a family pet and can do well in a small house or an apartment. The owners should pay lots of attention to these small dog because they are behaving friendly to all people and like to be part of all the action around them. The Boston terrier breed has a lot of uniques characteristics. The breeding history of the Boston terrier dogs starts in 1870, when a man from Boston purchased a crossbreed dog, having as parents an English White Terrier and an English Bulldog. The initial dog was bigger than the breeder wanted, so he crossed it again with a French bulldog, resulting what we are naming today as the Boston terrier dogs. One of the unique characteristics of the Boston terrier breed is the purpose of the breeding, these dogs beeing the first in America to be bred for other purposes then sports or hunting. In their attempt to remove the general perception about the terriers, as beeing aggressive dogs, the breeders of the Boston terrier dogs focused more on their show potential.

The Unique Temperament and Personality of the Boston Terrier

Having a high-spirited personality, the dogs of the Boston terrier breed  try to make all the people around part of their activities. The ancestors of this breed of dogs were originally been bred for fighting, but the Boston terriers were bred to be companion dogs. Their owners or the members of their families can always count on the sweet and friendly disposition of these dogs which love to be the center of attention. It is a known fact about Boston Terriers that they are very affectionate toward their owners as well, often licking them in the face if the owner will let them. These dogs are social animal and get well in families with children or elderly people.

Taking Care of the Boston Terrier

In order to keep your Boston terrier dog healthy and alert you should ensure it makes a lot of exercise outdoors. Frequently running and playing in the sunshine will make a lot of good for their health status, though they are not hyperactive dogs. If they are staying outdoors, a fenced in backyard is a good idea, as well as a small doghouse to protect them from the elements. You should spend time with them, playing and petting them, as they need tender and loving care. They also need quality food and plenty of fresh water.

When looking for any pet, the best place to start is an animal rescue center. These are places that care for and look after abandoned Boston terriers and are always looking for foster families to take a Boston terrier or two off their hands.
