crate training what to do and not to do?

by Scott on July 30, 2010

My puppy is 9 weeks old and I just began crate training and am very knew on what to do and not to do? I read when she sleeps it should be only in her crate. Is it safe to place her in the crate after she is all content from eating playing and going potty so I can clean my house? I tryed leaving her out while I clean but she tinkles on my floor I rent an apartment so this behavior cannot persist an advice?

Crate training works on the principle that a dog won’t soil its sleeping area.

- never use the crate as punishment, incl time outs
- make the crate a safe place, leave toys in there
- your puppy can only be expected to hold its bladder for as many hours as it is months old + 1, so your 9 week puppy can at most be expected to hold its bladder and bowels for 3 hours – the current MAXIMUM time you should leave her in there. Yes, this means for the next couple of months you will have to get up in the middle of the night to take her out to pee/ poop. Welcome to puppyhood!
- crating is not just for house-training, it’s there to protect your puppy from getting into mischief when you can’t supervise (just don’t leave her in there for longer than necessary, see previous point) so yes, you can leave her in there while you get on with cleaning/ other errands.

Yes, it’s fine to crate while you are house cleaning or any time you can’t give your full attention to watch what she is doing. And yes, she should sleep in her crate, at least for now, I really like this website for do’s and don’ts.

A good rule of thumb for puppies to potty train:
Take them outside after:
eating, drinking, playing, and sleeping.

Do not use the crate to punish – it’s perfectly fine to put them in there when you are cleaning.

You want your puppy to associate their crate as their "safe place" or cave. The crate should only be big enough for them to stand up in and turn around "comfortable" – not too big or they will potty in the crate.

Best of luck to you!

You don’t have to have her in there every time she sleeps, only at night. If she takes a nap, it’s fine for her to be out as long as you are there watching her so she doesn’t get up and get in trouble. And yes, you can absolutely put her in there to clean. She will just take a nap and be content while you do what you need to do.
Here is a good website to tell you everything.
