dachshunds are not bred for that,,, they like to tunnel into the ground after rats
Umm sorry but I own standard longhair dachshunds and they are the most stubbornest breed of all dogs. They are hunting dogs but it will be tough to train them to hunt. They hunt on their own. Maybe if you just bring them hunting with you if they spot a bird they will probly run at it there for making it go into the air. My dogs do feild trails and earthdog. Also I show them. My husband hunts ducks and if we brought our dogs hunting they would not come back to us lol.
Good luck!
idk if a dachshund is a good dog for hunting. good dogs are usually spaniels, german shorthairs and others. id say take it to a hunt club and ask if they train dogs there. i guess all dogs like hunting but i think some just are too short for the corn/grass you hunt in also i dont think a dachshund will be a good or trainable dog.
also, hunting dogs have "hunting skill" in their genes
Dachshunds aren’t actually bird dogs, so good luck with that. However, part of a good method is to buy a pigeon, tie a bottle (humanely, please) around it’s foot to prevent it from flying far, and follow a good training guide on cues and commands. The live bird is great as it enables you to do it over and over without going through tons of birds.
You’ll probably get him to flush birds. Dachshunds are used a lot in the Continent.
http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/ is a good site. Ask there and you should get some good advice.
http://leerburg.com/ to establish basic training before doing any sort of work. He needs to have very good obedience before being started working.
ADD: Who the hell gave me a thumbs down? F*ck you! I didn’t say a dachs is the best dog, but it probably could do the job alright!
Good luck!
Dachsunds aren’t the best breed for hunting pheasants because their short legs make it difficult for them to get through heavy field brush. If he’s bird crazy though, a little tough terrain won’t stop him.
One method that works is to take a pheasant (a dead one), and drag it on the ground. Give the dog the scent and let him find the bird, reward him with a taste of it. For some dogs, this is enough to get hunting into their blood.
