This perfectly describes the Dogo Argentino, protective of their family, and great hunters

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a classic hunting dog with a strong prey drive, and independent nature. They are an intelligent dog that can be quite destructive if left at home alone all day. They are quite discriminating in what they bark at, so whatever it is, you should definitely investigate! Count on your Ridgeback to aggressively protect you, if necessary.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are loyal and intelligent. They are, however, aloof to strangers. This is not to be confused with aggression; a Ridgeback of proper temperament will be more inclined to ignore, rather than challenge, a stranger. This breed requires positive, reward-based training, good socialization and consistency; it is often not the best choice for inexperienced dog owners. Ridgebacks are strong-willed, intelligent, and many seem to have a penchant for mischief, though loving. They are protective of their owners and families. If trained well, they can be excellent guard dogs.

Despite their athletic, sometimes imposing, exterior, the Ridgeback has a sensitive side. Excessively harsh training methods, that might be tolerated by a sporting or working dog, will likely backfire on a Ridgeback. The Ridgeback accepts correction as long as it is fair and justified, and as long as it comes from someone he knows and trusts. Francis R. Barnes, who wrote the first standard in 1922, acknowledged that "rough treatment … should never be administered to these dogs, especially when they are young. They go to pieces with handling of that kind."

There are differing opinions whether these dogs make good companions for children. Their size and independent nature make them hard for children to control, either when going for a walk or having a good natured tussle.

Basically, Ridgebacks do not enjoy being pestered for any length of time and may bite if they feel sufficiently threatened. If they’re not in the mood to play, they need to be left alone. This is easier for a child who has been raised around dogs and understands the body language of a dog that is saying "back off". A child who has just received his very first puppy will find it hard to understand why he can’t continue to play with his new pet as long as he wants. Adults should plan to supervise playtime for the safety of all concerned.

#Labs are also good with children and good hunting dogs. But their nature is way too sensitive to be a good guard dog.

#GSDs aren’t good hunting dogs.

German Shepard, best for guarding and can be trained, very friendly to family, and yeah depending on the training you give it can be used for hunting.

Cane Corsos I love them…..They LOVE me they LOVE my kids… and will kill a stranger if they come in my yard. Or at least disfigure them

i think labs are great dogs with kids and they r very protective. my dad had one and the kids loved him they could grab him lay on him all kinds of stuff and he NEVER bit or even growled at them . if anyone moved towards the kids to fast then he would growl and if he didn’t know them he would bite them. they r a great dog to train and hunt with , especially duck….they love the water. waring ..if u have a kids pool out the dog will take it over..lol.

DONT GET A GERMAN SHEAPARD ..THEY ARE VERY SMART, EASY TO TRAIN.. AND GOOD HUNTERS AND SOMETIMES GOOD WITH KIDS BUT ITS NOT NORMALLY THIER NATURE..THEY ARE A GREAT DOG IF U HAVE TEENAGERS ONLY. THEY DONT LIKE KIDS HANGING ON THEM!!

German Shepherd. If you mean by guard dog is only barking, then scottish terrier and schnauzer can do too. They’re hunters, kid-friendly, and good as ‘beginner’s pet’.

It is important to do research on the dogs you consider. A watch dog and a guard dog are 2 different things. The ability of the owner to train a guard dog is very important for it to also be a well behaved and well balanced family dog.

definitely the english mastiff. they are the most gentle giants there are, they will absolutely cuddle with you and your kids, AND disfigure anybody that threatens their family. Also, you could easily train one for hunting, it just might take a little longer because they aren’t the smartest around

Most people think if they have a guard dog breed, it will attack someone coming in the yard at night.
However thats 100% wrong the guard dog breeds have to be protection trained to do this, as Kendra
said a Rhodesian Ridgeback will probably be the dog for you. I havent owned one of these but i know about them through a couple of mates they are very good hunting dogs, excellent guard dogs and good with children. Whichever dog you choose good luck! :)

German shepard :)

There are a number of dogs you could choose from…Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepard, American Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Staffordshire Bull Terrier..the list goes on it’s just down to personal preference just make sure you give it lots of exercise and good training..And most importantly dont just get a dog for show to make yourself look cool and tough…it just wont work.

rottie_mom July 12, 2010 at 2:56 pm

A Mountain Cur would be a good breed for you and your family!
these dogs make good hunting companions, they are very family oriented, and they protect there property and family when needed…the only down side with this breed is they can be full of energy and need a large amount of exercise…hope this helps…Good luck on finding a little bundle of joy for you and your family.
